Happy event today, Mavis was safely delivered of a boy calf. Well when I say delivered, she was grazing one minute and out he popped five minutes later, leaving Mavis to resume grazing position within a ten minute interval. I am amazed what a happy family bunch these Hereford Cows are. No sooner was Basil (that’s what they have named the litte bull calf) being cleaned off by his mom but the rest of the herd had quietly moved over to have a look at the new arrival. They stayed there all night to make sure he kept warm and safe. Luckily Mavis had held on to him long enough to pick the only dry day we have had for ages to give birth. Let’s hope that’s a sign of better weather to come.
